OUTREACH – OPERATION BACKPACK
Background
Many area families struggle to provide weekend meals for their children. Operation Backpack, is a free ministry of Discovery Church located in Cibolo, Texas. It’s our vision to help families eat healthy meals and snacks by partnering with a local elementary school.
How Operation Backpack Works
Each Friday afternoon elementary school children receive a backpack of healthy foods and snacks. On Monday the child returns the empty backpack to the main office to be restocked with food for the following Friday. An Operation Backpack may include the following items: cereal, breakfast bars, oatmeal, juice, tuna kits, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter crackers, soup, apple sauce, fruit cups, ravioli, vegetables, and other nutritious food – all non-perishable items.
Who Can Participate?
Beginning in February 2010, Discovery Church will work with families from Schertz Elementary School through Operation Backpack. Program participation will be kept confidential.
Program Partners
Operation Backpack is supported by Discovery Church. If your organization is interested in supporting this program please contact the church.
How Can I Help?
We need volunteers to take a backpack home and fill it with nutritionally sound food. Please bring your backpack to the church office by noon on Thursday (office hours are M-Th 9am-4pm). A list of needed food items is available on the back of this brochure. Financial donations can be made at: www.discoverylife.org or at our weekly Sunday services.
